England has not won a big trophy since 1966.

That was 60 years ago.

Sixty years of hoping. Sixty years of "this is our year." Sixty years of heartbreak in semi-finals and quarter-finals and penalty shootouts that nobody wants to remember.

And now here they are. World Cup 2026. Round of 32. Atlanta.

Against DR Congo.

On paper this looks easy. England are one of the best teams at this tournament. DR Congo are playing in their first ever knockout game at a World Cup. They have never been here before in their entire history.

But here is the thing about England.

They have a very special talent. A talent for making easy games look hard. A talent for finding ways to worry their own fans even when they are winning. A talent for giving everyone heart attacks.

At Ultimate Rankings, fans are very much split on whether England will actually deliver today. Let us look at everything you need to know.

How Did England Get Here?

England had a group stage that was good and bad at the same time.

Here is England's group stage in simple numbers:

  • Beat Croatia 4-2 — wonderful football, everyone was excited
  • Drew 0-0 with Ghana — boring, slow, nobody could score
  • Beat Panama 2-0 — okay, but it took an hour before anything happened

So England finished top of their group. That is good.

But they have not played ninety minutes of great football yet. Not one full game.

Today is the day when that needs to change.

Who Are DR Congo?

DR Congo is a country in Africa. Their nickname is the Leopards.

Here is something really important to know about DR Congo.

The last time they played in a World Cup was 1974. At that time the country was called Zaire. They were very, very bad. They lost all three games and conceded 14 goals without scoring one.

That was 52 years ago.

This time? Completely different.

Here is what DR Congo did in the group stage:

  • Drew 1-1 with Colombia — held a strong South American team
  • Drew 1-1 with Portugal — held Cristiano Ronaldo's team for most of the game
  • Beat Uzbekistan 3-1 — scored three goals and qualified

Four points. Best third-place team in the whole tournament. That is how they got here.

Their best players:

  • Yoane Wissa — plays for Newcastle United, scored three goals in the group stage. Had a terrible season at Newcastle but looks completely different for his country. Fast, strong, takes his chances well.
  • Chancel Mbemba — captain and centre-back. Organises the whole defence. Hard to get past.
  • Aaron Wan-Bissaka — plays for West Ham in England. He knows exactly how English teams play. That is actually a problem for England.
  • Goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi — has been excellent. Made big saves at exactly the right moments.

DR Congo's plan is simple. Defend deep. Stay organised. Attack fast on the counter.

They did it against Portugal. They can do it against England.

The England Stars Who Need to Step Up

England has two players who are good enough to win any match on their own.

Harry Kane has three World Cup goals already at this tournament. He is hunting a second World Cup Golden Boot. Kane is one of the best strikers in the world. You can see it in how he plays.

Jude Bellingham is 23 years old and plays every game like it is the most important of his life. At Euro 2024 he scored a last-minute bicycle kick to keep England alive. Nobody forgot that. He will be the most dangerous player on the pitch today.

Bukayo Saka will play on the right side. DR Congo will try to stop him all game. If Saka finds space, England scores.

Declan Rice is back in the team after a small injury. England are a much better team when Rice plays. He controls the middle of the pitch and stops the other team from attacking easily.

Why England Should Win But Will Not Make It Look Easy

England is much better than DR Congo. Everyone knows this.

Better players. More experience. A manager in Thomas Tuchel who has won trophies at the biggest clubs in the world.

But here is the problem England keeps having.

They struggle against teams that defend deep.

When Ghana sat back and let England have the ball, England could not score. When Panama did the same thing, England took an hour to finally find a way through.

DR Congo will do exactly the same thing. Five defenders. Three midfielders. Compact. Organised. Hard to break down.

The three things England need to do to win:

  • Score early — if they score in the first 30 minutes, DR Congo have to come out and attack. That gives England more space.
  • Use corners and free kicks — Declan Rice and Harry Kane are brilliant at set pieces. England scored two goals from corners in the group stage.
  • Keep Bellingham involved — every time Bellingham gets the ball in a dangerous area, something good happens for England.

The Referee, the Crowd, and the Pressure

Here is something worth knowing.

This game is being played in Atlanta, Georgia in the United States. Most of the crowd will be neutral American football fans who just want to see a good game.

That removes one pressure from England. They will not have 60,000 English fans watching every touch and sighing when things go wrong.

But it also removes one advantage. England do not have that wall of noise behind them that they get at Wembley. They have to create their own energy.

For DR Congo, playing in a neutral stadium is perfect. They do not get nervous at neutral grounds. They just play their game.

What Fans on Ultimate Rankings Think

We asked fans at Ultimate Rankings who wins today.

The votes came in:

  • England win — 72%
  • DR Congo win or penalties — 28%

72% for England is strong. But look at that 28% number. Before Germany and Netherlands were knocked out, almost nobody picked Paraguay or Morocco to win either.

Football is unpredictable. That is why we watch.

Can the Three Lions Finally Deliver When It Matters Most?

England have all the talent they need to win this World Cup. Kane. Bellingham. Saka. Rice. It is a very good squad.

But talent is only part of it. The other part is consistency. Playing well for 90 minutes instead of 30. Not waiting for a big player to do something special. Creating enough chances that even if some are missed, enough go in.

Today against DR Congo is the moment England needs to show they can do that.
