The NBA doesn’t need to eliminate the 3-point shot — it just needs to fix it
There’s been a lot of discussion about how the NBA now has:
- too much isolation ball
- too many 3-point shots
- less ball movement
- more predictability
Even Steve Kerr — whose career benefited enormously from the 3-point shot — has suggested the league may need major changes.
But the NBA doesn’t need to eliminate the 3-pointer entirely.
👉 The simpler solution:
Move the 3-point line back to 25 feet and eliminate the corner 3.
In practice:
- keep the 3-point arc only at the top
- remove corner 3s entirely
- shots inside 25 feet = worth 2 points
The corner 3 is:
- shorter
- easier
- analytically overpowered
That’s a huge reason teams spam threes now.
The NBA could theoretically widen the court to preserve corner 3s, but that doesn’t seem practical.
A longer 3-point line would:
- reduce volume slightly
- increase shot variety
- bring back more midrange/off-ball action
- make great shooters more valuable again
Do you think the NBA shoots too many 3s now?
If so, what’s the best solution?
