Why Do People Love Ranking Everything? The Psychology Behind Our Obsession With Top 10 Lists

People love to rank things. The greatest athletes, best movies, greatest singers, most beautiful celebrities, best foods, greatest songs, top vacation destinations, and even the best fast-food hamburgers can turn into surprisingly passionate arguments.

Why? Part of the answer is obvious: rankings are fun. But there is actually much more going on because rankings combine opinions, competition, nostalgia, curiosity, and the natural human desire to compare things and put them in some kind of order.

Rankings Give Us an Answer Even When There Isn't One

People like answers. We want to know who is the greatest basketball player of all time, what is the greatest movie ever made, and who is the greatest rock band of all time even when we know deep down that there may be no objectively correct answer.

That uncertainty actually makes rankings more interesting. If there were a mathematical formula proving that Michael Jordan was No. 1 and LeBron James was No. 2, there wouldn't be much left to discuss. The fact that reasonable people can look at the same evidence and reach different conclusions is what keeps these debates alive.

Rankings also force us to make decisions. Saying that The Godfather, Casablanca, The Shawshank Redemption, and The Wizard of Oz are all great movies is easy. Putting them in order is where things get interesting.

Everybody Thinks Their Opinion Counts

Rankings allow people to express their personalities and preferences. A person's favorite athletes, movies, television shows, musicians, foods, or celebrities can tell you a surprising amount about them, including their age, interests, upbringing, and sometimes even where they grew up.

They also give everyone a chance to be the expert. You don't need to work for ESPN to have an opinion about the greatest NFL quarterbacks of all time, and you don't need to be a movie critic to believe that a film ranked No. 37 on somebody else's list belongs in the Top 10.

That is one reason social media has caused ranking discussions to explode. The argument that once took place among five friends at a bar can now involve thousands of people on X, Facebook, Reddit, YouTube, TikTok, and other websites within minutes.

Nostalgia Makes Rankings Personal

Nostalgia plays a huge role in almost every all-time ranking. People tend to form strong attachments to the athletes, entertainers, songs, movies, and television shows they experienced when they were younger.

That is why ranking arguments frequently become generational arguments. Michael Jordan and LeBron James isn't just a basketball debate for many fans; it becomes the 1980s and 1990s versus the 2000s and 2020s. The same thing happens when Beatles fans argue with people who prefer modern music, or when someone insists television was better 30 years ago.

Recency bias works in the opposite direction. Younger voters may rank today's stars higher because they actually watched them perform, while older legends become names and statistics instead of people they experienced firsthand. Neither side is necessarily being dishonest—they simply have different frames of reference.

People Love Competition, Even When They Aren't Competing

Sports make this especially obvious. Fans don't merely want to know that Michael Jordan and LeBron James were great—they want to know who was greater. They don't just want to celebrate Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods; eventually somebody asks who deserves No. 1.

The same competitive instinct exists in entertainment. Who was the greatest singer? What was the funniest sitcom? Who was the greatest actor? What is the greatest horror movie of all time?

Once someone creates a ranking, another person immediately wants to change it. Put someone's favorite at No. 8 instead of No. 3 and suddenly you have a debate, which is exactly what makes rankings so engaging.

Rankings Are Simple, but the Arguments Aren't

Another reason rankings are so popular is that they make complicated subjects easy to understand. A Top 10 list takes hundreds or thousands of possibilities and turns them into something people can look at, understand, disagree with, and discuss immediately.

But creating a good ranking is much harder than it looks. Do you reward peak greatness or longevity? Popularity or technical ability? Championships or individual statistics? Cultural influence or pure talent? Historical importance or how something holds up today?

Change the criteria and you can completely change the ranking. That is why there will probably never be a final answer to most “Greatest of All Time” questions—and there shouldn't be.

Voting Makes Rankings Even More Interesting

For decades, magazines, newspapers, television networks, critics, and small panels of experts told everyone what was No. 1. Sometimes their rankings were excellent, and sometimes fans looked at them and wondered what on earth those people were thinking.

Today there is no reason the public has to simply accept someone else's rankings. Fans can debate them, vote on them, and collectively decide who or what deserves to move up or down.

That is the idea behind UltimateRankings.com. Instead of one writer declaring who the greatest athlete, singer, actor, movie, team, or television show is, the fans get a vote.

After all, there may never be a provably correct answer to most rankings. But arguing about them, voting on them, and seeing what everyone else thinks may be almost as much fun as the things we're ranking in the first place.
